Newsletter – Autumn Term 2005
September 2005
We visited Blackmoor
Apple Farm and we picked and tasted many different varieties of English
apples and pears. We were all fascinated to learn that it is not only
birds that help themselves when they’re feeling a bit
peckish! Apparently, badgers are able to climb trees and they enjoy fruit
too! There was a bumper crop of apples and pears this year so at the weekend
many of us went back to Blackmoor and picked bagfuls of fruit for 11 pence
per pound! In school, we learnt the names of all the apples and did some
apple printing. We also made apple crumble – delicious, especially with
the addition of some blackberries picked from the hedges around our garden!
Some of the children particularly enjoyed watching the tractor collecting
huge boxes of apples from the orchards so one of our local farmers brought
his tractor to School and allowed each of us to climb into the driving
seat! Our new session for two year olds in addition to our sessions for
the older children has proved to be so popular that we already have a
waiting list. We are planning to offer two sessions to two year olds per
week from next September.
October 2005
In October we held our own Harvest celebrationand parents
donated gifts of fruit and vegetables. We made a beautiful harvest loaf
and some of the children brought in pumpkins, which they had grown from
the seeds we sowed in the summer. We distributed the fresh produce to
pensioners living in the local area. Next year we hope to be able to harvest
our vegetables from our own garden. We began work on this last year and
we now have four beautiful raised beds all ready to be planted out.
November 2005
In November, we told the story of Guy Fawkes and the
“Gunpowder plot” and we made fireworks, a bonfire and a Guy from junk.
The children enjoyed taking turns at being King James and the soldiers,
but no-one wanted to be Guy! We learnt about hedgehogs and hibernation
and the children worried that a hedgehog might make its nest in a bonfire.
One morning the children all made their own chicken nuggets and they cut
up carrots and fruit, which they ate for lunch. Another morning we made
soup for lunch. We could have a new “Jamie Oliver” in the making, who
knows?
December 2005
In December, we practised hard for our Nativity Play
and
learnt some carols. Some of the children became confident enough to sing
solos. Strangely, we forgot about the baby and nearly had to make do with
a rolled up blanket! Father Christmas dropped in for our Christmas party
despite his hectic schedule and even remembered to bring a gift for each
child in the School. Next term we are going to learn about birds and we
plan to take part in the National
Annual Bird Watch weekend at the end of January. We are also hoping
to visit the Hawk
Conservancy near Andover. We shall be observing the birds that visit
our garden and are keeping our fingers crossed that some birds will nest
in our bird boxes. We shall, of course continue to provide food and water
for the birds.
