Newsletter – Spring Term 2006
This
term we have been learning about birds. We took part in the National RSPB Big
Schools' Bird Watch and set up our own "Hide". We made seed cakes,
provided water and the children quickly learned to identify the birds that visited
using binoculars to observe them more closely. The children also recorded the
various species they saw in their own gardens and we made a graph to show the
different types.
We
arranged for John Scott, from the Hawk
Conservancy to visit us with a Barn Owl named Avon. This was a marvellous
opportunity for the children to ask questions and see this beautiful bird at close
quarters. Many of the children were able to hold Avon and John was very impressed
by how much they knew about owls.
Next term, on 22nd May, we are going
to visit the Conservancy to see and learn more about some birds of prey.
In
March we went to watch a production of "The Hare and The Tortoise"
one of the famous Aesop Fables at Dunannie School. We all enjoyed the show, which
although did not contain the message of perseverance and determination as intended
in the original version, did succeed in emphasising the importance of tolerance
and friendship. The children were keen to participate in the production and to
point out the difference between rabbits and hares! It was fun to meet up with
other local nurseries and schools too.
Mothers'
Day Gifts were made this term by the children to mark their Mums special day in
a very special way!
We
have started planting out our garden with a variety of plants, which we hope will
help to attract butterflies and other wildlife. We are looking forward to more
gardening sessions next term when we shall be able to grow some vegetables and
flowers when our topic will be all about "Growing".
Our
two year olds have settled in well and we have just registered our first children
for 2008! We have also introduced Makaton
signing into our sessions and the children have taken to it with remarkable
ease and enthusiasm.
